    Basalt-polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete for durable and sustainable pipe production. Part 1: experimental program

This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with Wiley Terms and Conditions for Self-Archiving.An experimental program consisting in producing and testing reinforced concrete pipes (RCPs) under the three-edge bearing tests considering different types of reinforcement was carried out. Four types of RCPs were produced, these reinforced with: (1) polypropylene macrofibers; (2) basalt microfibers; (3) combination of both (hybrid reinforcement); and (4) plain concrete. The analysis of the crack patterns and both service and ultimate mechanical responses allowed concluding that the use of fibers do not lead to an effective increase of the first cracking load; however, both types of fibers allowed a better crack width control respect to the standard RCP. In this regard, basalt microfiber reinforced concrete led to a better response caused by concentrated loads (jacketing) whilst polypropylene macrofibers increased the concrete pipe performance in terms of bearing capacity and flexural crack control. The hybrid fiber reinforced concrete was found to be the most suitable alternative for increasing the load bearing capacity and the crack width control for service loads.     A Systematic Survey of Control Techniques and Applications: From Autonomous Vehicles to Connected and Automated Vehicles

    Vehicle control is one of the most critical challenges in autonomous vehicles (AVs) and connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), and it is paramount in vehicle safety, passenger comfort, transportation efficiency, and energy saving. This survey attempts to provide a comprehensive and thorough overview of the current state of vehicle control technology, focusing on the evolution from vehicle state estimation and trajectory tracking control in AVs at the microscopic level to collaborative control in CAVs at the macroscopic level. First, this review starts with vehicle key state estimation, specifically vehicle sideslip angle, which is the most pivotal state for vehicle trajectory control, to discuss representative approaches. Then, we present symbolic vehicle trajectory tracking control approaches for AVs. On top of that, we further review the collaborative control frameworks for CAVs and corresponding applications. Finally, this survey concludes with a discussion of future research directions and the challenges. This survey aims to provide a contextualized and in-depth look at state of the art in vehicle control for AVs and CAVs, identifying critical areas of focus and pointing out the potential areas for further exploration

    Radiated tumor cell-derived microparticles effectively kill stem-like tumor cells by increasing reactive oxygen species

    Stem-like tumor cells (SLTCs) are thought to be the cellular entity responsible for clinical recurrence and subsequent metastasis. Inhibiting or killing SLTCs can effectively reduce recurrence and metastasis, yet little has been done to clear SLTCs because they are usually resistant to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and even immunotherapy. In this study, we established SLTCs by low-serum culture and confirmed that the low-serum-cultured tumor cells were in a quiescent state and resistant to chemotherapy, showing features of SLTCs, consistent with the reported data. We demonstrated that SLTCs had high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Based on the finding that radiated tumor cell-derived microparticles (RT-MPs) contained ROS, we used RT-MPs to kill SLTCs. We found that RT-MPs could further increase ROS levels and kill SLTCs in vivo and in vitro partially by ROS carried by the RT-MPs themselves, providing a new method for eliminating SLTCs

    Modification effect of changes in cardiometabolic traits in association between kidney stones and cardiovascular events

    BackgroundsWhether longitudinal changes in metabolic status influence the effect of kidney stones on cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains unclarified. We investigated the modification effect of status changes in metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the association of kidney stones with risk of incident CVD events.MethodsWe performed a prospective association and interaction study in a nationwide cohort including 129,172 participants aged ≥ 40 years without CVDs at baseline and followed up for an average of 3.8 years. Kidney stones information was collected by using a questionnaire and validated by medical records. The repeated biochemical measurements were performed to ascertain the metabolic status at both baseline and follow-up.Results4,017 incident total CVDs, 1,413 coronary heart diseases (CHDs) and 2,682 strokes were documented and ascertained during follow-up. Kidney stones presence was significantly associated with 44%, 70% and 31% higher risk of CVDs, CHDs and stroke, respectively. The stratified analysis showed significant associations were found in the incident and sustained MetS patients, while no significant associations were found in the non-MetS at both baseline and follow-up subjects or the MetS remission ones, especially in women. For the change status of each single component of the MetS, though the trends were not always the same, the associations with CVD were consistently significant in those with sustained metabolic disorders, except for the sustained high blood glucose group, while the associations were consistently significant in those with incident metabolic disorders except for the incident blood pressure group. We also found a significant association of kidney stone and CVD or CHD risk in the remain normal glucose or triglycerides groups; while the associations were consistently significant in those with incident metabolic disorders except for the incident blood pressure group. We also found a significant association of kidney stone and CVD or CHD risk in the remain normal glucose or triglycerides groups.ConclusionsA history of kidney stones in women with newly developed MetS or long-standing MetS associated with increased risk of CVD. The mechanisms link kidney stones and CVD risk in the metabolic and non-metabolic pathways were warranted for further studies

    The Relative Body Weight Gain From Early to Middle Life Adulthood Associated With Later Life Risk of Diabetes: A Nationwide Cohort Study

    AimTo determine the effect of decade-based body weight gain from 20 to 50 years of age on later life diabetes risk.Methods35,611 non-diabetic participants aged ≥ 50 years from a well-defined nationwide cohort were followed up for average of 3.6 years, with cardiovascular diseases and cancers at baseline were excluded. Body weight at 20, 30, 40, and 50 years was reported. The overall 30 years and each 10-year weight gain were calculated from the early and middle life. Cox regression models were used to estimate risks of incident diabetes.ResultsAfter 127,745.26 person-years of follow-up, 2,789 incident diabetes were identified (incidence rate, 2.18%) in 25,289 women (mean weight gain 20-50 years, 7.60 kg) and 10,322 men (7.93 kg). Each 10-kg weight gain over the 30 years was significantly associated with a 39.7% increased risk of incident diabetes (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.33-1.47); weight gain from 20-30 years showed a more prominent effect on the risk of developing diabetes before 60 years than that of after 60 years (Hazard ratio, HR = 1.084, 95% CI [1.049-1.121], P <0.0001 vs. 1.015 [0.975-1.056], P = 0.4643; PInteraction=0.0293). It showed a stable effect of the three 10-year intervals weight gain on risk of diabetes after 60 years (HR=1.055, 1.038, 1.043, respectively, all P < 0.0036).ConclusionsThe early life weight gain showed a more prominent effect on developing diabetes before 60 years than after 60 years; however, each-decade weight gain from 20 to 50 years showed a similar effect on risk developing diabetes after 60 years

    A framework of Economic-Social-Natural sustainability evaluation based on multidimensional land-use ecological niche theory: Evidence in Shendong CEBs, China

    Coal-electricity base cities (CEBs) are coal-based electric energy centralized and sustained production and output cities built following China’s strategic energy layout, in regions with abundant coal resources, and by the integrated coal-electricity production model. However, CEBs are mainly located in the ecologically fragile area, and coal mining activities and anthropogenic pressures caused a series of land ecological effects such as dramatic land resources change, the alleviation of land supply and demand conflict, and land damage surrounding mining area. Currently, there is not enough research on land use in CEBs, and less attention has been paid to variation ecological system response. Aiming at this problem, the research constructed a modeling framework for evaluating the spatial and temporal evolution of land use characteristics and ecological response of CEBs land use from the perspective of “Economic-Social-Natural” by adopting methods of land transfer matrix, cluster analysis, ecological niche theory, and center of gravity model. Shendong mining area was accordingly chosen as the research region to explore the multidimensional land use dynamic evolution by bringing into the evaluating framework. Therefore, the Shendong area was accordingly chosen as the research region, and land is used as the spatial carrier to explore the evaluation effect of the model framework. The result showed that grassland played a considerable role in the procedure of land transformation with the greatest utilization degree, followed by cultivated land and used land. For ecological niche, mining land and water area dominated the core economic niche, mining land, and construction land occupied the social niche, mining land controlled mostly natural niche and comprehensive niche value. In terms of ecologically integrated and comprehensive quantitative evaluation response, the production functional area, living functional area, and ecological functional area of CEBs were also quantitatively depicted and evaluated. Ecological management should focus on the downtown area of Shenmu and optimize land use patterns by increasing vegetation cover. This study combines different types of indicators to derive regional differences in ecological niches, providing an assessment method for decision makers and stakeholders to optimize land use structure and improve the ecological benefits of CEBs

    Toward Energy-Efficient Routing of Multiple AGVs with Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning

    This paper presents a multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) algorithm to address the scheduling and routing problems of multiple automated guided vehicles (AGVs), with the goal of minimizing overall energy consumption. The proposed algorithm is developed based on the multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG) algorithm, with modifications made to the action and state space to fit the setting of AGV activities. While previous studies overlooked the energy efficiency of AGVs, this paper develops a well-designed reward function that helps to optimize the overall energy consumption required to fulfill all tasks. Moreover, we incorporate the e-greedy exploration strategy into the proposed algorithm to balance exploration and exploitation during training, which helps it converge faster and achieve better performance. The proposed MARL algorithm is equipped with carefully selected parameters that aid in avoiding obstacles, speeding up path planning, and achieving minimal energy consumption. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, three types of numerical experiments including the ϵ-greedy MADDPG, MADDPG, and Q-Learning methods were conducted. The results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively solve the multi-AGV task assignment and path planning problems, and the energy consumption results show that the planned routes can effectively improve energy efficiency

    Study on the Cooling Effect of Asphalt Pavement Blended with Composite Phase Change Materials

    To explore the cooling effect of phase change materials (PCM) on asphalt pavement, a numerical model of the coupled heat transfer process of a typical monolithic subgrade of the G7 Expressway in the eastern Tianshan mountain area was developed. Three types of paraffin materials (OP55E, OP52E, OP47E) were mixed in a 4:3:3 volume ratio and blended into the asphalt upper layer and overall asphalt layer at volume ratios of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%. The cooling effect of different PCM addition schemes was simulated and analyzed, and the frequency and duration of asphalt pavement high temperature operation status were also measured. The results showed that: (1) Th addition of PCM in the asphalt layer can effectively reduce the frequency of pavement high temperature rutting damage. The number of days and average daily duration of high temperature on the road surface were both reduced. (2) The cooling effect was positively correlated with the PCM volume mixing ratio, and the temperature drop of the pavement also increased with the increase of the PCM blending ratio. As the PCM mixing ratio increased from 5% to 20%, the initial 75 °C pavement cooled by 1.49 °C and 4.66 °C, respectively, and the number of days and hours of pavement temperature over 70 °C decreased to 4 days and 3.3 h, respectively. (3) The cooling effect of the asphalt upper layer PCM scheme was greater at a small mixing ratio (5%), whereas the performance of the overall asphalt layer PCM blended scheme was effectively promoted by increasing the equivalent heat capacity of system under the large mixing ratio (20%)

    Experiment Study on Mechanical Evolution Characteristics of Coal and Rock under Three-Dimensional Triaxial Stress

    The surrounding rock is in a complex stress environment and its mechanical behavior is also complex, especially after the excavation of the coal seam, the phenomenon of stress release of surrounding rock often occurs. The vertical stress and horizontal stress of the surrounding rock mass will have a series of complex changes. In underground engineering, rock mass is affected by dead weight pressure and tectonic stress. With coal mine production, the original stress of surrounding rock is demolished, and the destruction of surrounding rock is reflected in the loading and unloading failure of three-dimensional stress. Aiming at the phenomenon, this paper takes the Pingshuo East open-pit mine as the research background, and the experiments on physical and mechanical parameters of coal and rock mass was carried out, obtaining the coal and rock mechanics parameters, such as elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, internal friction angle, cohesive force, etc. The stress strain curve was created based on the conventional triaxial experiment of coal and rock under different confining pressure conditions. According to the characteristics of these curves, we obtain underground engineering rock mass unloading stress–strain variation characteristics. Through establishing a stress–strain equation based on confining pressure, we finally describe the mechanical failure characteristics of rock under triaxial stress

    A Conflict Duration Graph-Based Coordination Method for Connected and Automated Vehicles at Signal-Free Intersections

    Previous studies on Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) demonstrated the potential to coordinate the behaviors of multiple connected vehicles for traffic improvements. In this paper, we first propose a Conflict Duration Graph-based (CDG-based) coordination framework to resolve collisions and improve the traffic capacity of signal-free intersections. Secondly, a Speed Control-based Intersection Coordination Model (SICM) is developed to identify complex constraints in multi-vehicle collision scenarios. Thirdly, a geometric Translation-based Intersection Coordination Algorithm (TICA) is proposed to calculate the ideal location of time blocks in CDGs and then obtain the near-optimal design speed in the form of combinatorial optimization. Twelve groups of test scenarios with different traffic volumes were designed and tested on a MATLAB-based simulation platform. Simulation results showed that the proposed method can resolve all the collisions and instruct the vehicles to pass signal-free intersections collaboratively without stopping in low to medium level of congestion
